She is 14 years old and a school dropout, but West Bengal resident Seema still mustered up the courage to stand up to her family and foiled an attempt to get her married by calling a helpline.
The Class 7 dropout, who was to tie the nuptial knot on Wednesday, called up the helpline number urging them to intervene and stop her marriage, police said on Tuesday. The incident took place in Purulia district.
“The girl, a resident of Beldi village under Arsha police station called up Childline, and informed them that she was being married off. Subsequently we intervened and rescued the girl,” district police superintendent C. Sudhakar said.
While her father was remanded to 14 days’ judicial custody by a local court, the girl was sent to a government home.
“After we started the awareness campaign regarding child marriage in late 2008, at least 64 girls have resisted early marriage in the district, which is a great achievement,” said Prosenjit Kundu, assistant labour commissioner of the district.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) called upon governments to work together and with the aviation industry to maximize avia

tion’s ability to sustainably drive global economic development and job creation.

“Governments and industry share a common interest in aviation’s success. Aviation is a business and a driver of economic and social development that is vitally important to governments. About 3 billion people fly annually. And the nearly 50 million tonnes of cargo transported by air represents some 35% of the value of goods traded internationally” said Tony Tyler, IATA director general and CEO while speaking at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) International Air Transport Symposium.

Aviation is a highly regulated industry at the national, regional and global levels.“Sustainability depends not only on what airlines do for themselves but also the policies adopted by governments,” said Tyler. “Regulation that is neither coordinated nor mutually recognized brings a high cost of compliance without corresponding benefits, while maintaining restrictions on airlines’ access to global capital and to markets has kept airlines financially weak,” said Tyler noting the important role of ICAO in delivering solutions to ensure aviation’s sustainability in the broadest of terms.

Tyler cited four areas where policy efforts are needed to ensure aviation’s financial sustainability:
- Infrastructure: Modernization of air traffic management is needed to reduce delays, save fuel and cut CO2 emissions.
- User Charges: Effective regulation of monopoly suppliers is required to ensure sufficient infrastructure, reasonable returns for operators and cost-efficient prices for airlines, in line with ICAO-agreed principles.
- Fees and Taxes: Policies are needed that re-invest aviation tax receipts back into the industry and to ensure that aviation is treated as an economic catalyst not a cash cow.
- Regulation: An approach is needed that resists the urge to micro-manage competition, allows airlines to explore different business models and enables market forces to play out.

Additionally, Tyler noted the need for a globally coordinated approach among governments to managing aviation’s 2% contribution to manmade CO2 emissions. “Aviation has committed to three targets, the most ambitious of which is to cut net emissions in half by 2050 compared to 2005. We cannot do that without government cooperation. As aviation is a global industry, that cooperation must be coordinated through ICAO.

That is why Europe’s inclusion of international aviation in its emissions trading scheme is counter-productive. The regional approach distorts markets. And it will not have the positive impact on sustainability of globally coordinated measures through ICAO. On top of that, the unilateral and extra-territorial approach is seen by non-European states as an attack on their sovereignty,” said Tyler.

“Nobody wants a trade war. And I am confident that if Europe participates whole-heartedly at ICAO—being prepared to find solutions with the international community beyond its current plans—ICAO will successfully facilitate a durable solution for environmental sustainability,” said Tyler.

“Aviation connectivity is the infrastructure of our global community. A key component of sustainability must be a pragmatic and comprehensive policy approach focused on building competitiveness to maximize aviation’s economic and social benefits,” Tyler said.

A recent Oxford Economics study reported that aviation globally is responsible for 56.6 million jobs and $2.2 trillion in economic activity—3.5% of global GDP.

Breast cancer is “not one disease, but 10 different diseases”, according to a “landmark” study that could revolutionise its treatment. An international team of researchers that analysed breast cancers from 2,000 women said the classifications could help improve treatment by tailoring drugs for patients’ exact type of breast cancer and also predict survival more accurately. It will take at least three more years for the findings to be used in hospitals, the researchers said. In the study, published in the journal Nature, the team analysed genetics of frozen breast cancer samples from 2,000 women at hospitals in the UK and Canada

They looked in huge detail at the genetics of the tumour cells – which genes had been mutated, which genes were working in overdrive, which were being shut down.

They found that all the different ways the cells changed when they became cancerous could be grouped into 10 different categories, named IntClust one to 10. Each tumour within a particular group shares similar genes and different women with the same type have similar odds of survival.

“Breast cancer is not one disease, but 10 different diseases,” lead researcher Prof Carlos Caldas, was quoted as saying by the BBC News.

He added: “Our results will pave the way for doctors in the future to diagnose the type of breast cancer a woman has, the types of drugs that will work and those that won’t, in a much more precise way than is currently possible.”

At the moment, breast cancers are classified by what they look like under the micros

cope and tests for “markers” on the tumours. Those with “oestrogen receptors” should respond to hormone therapies, while those with a “Her2 receptor” can be treated with Herceptin.

The vast majority of breast cancers, over 70 per cent, should respond to hormone therapies. However, their reaction to treatment varies wildly.

“Some do well, some do horribly. Clearly we need better classification,” said Prof Caldas.

Dr Harpal Singh, of Cancer Research UK that funded the study, said: “This study will change the way we look at breast cancer, it will have an enormous impact in the years to come in diagnosing and treating breast cancer.”

Dr Singh said the charity would begin using the new criteria in clinical trials it funded. Outside of trials for new cancer drugs, the new breast cancer rulebook could take some time to directly benefit patients, he added.

Baroness Delyth Morgan, chief executive of the Breast Cancer Campaign, said the study could “revolutionise the way breast cancer is diagnosed and treated”.

“Being able to tailor treatments to the needs of individual patients is considered the Holy Grail for clinicians and this extensive study brings us another step further to that goal.”

Despite great strides being made in breast cancer in recent years, the disease is still one of biggest killers which claims the lives of almost 1,000 women a month in the UK alone
